Creole Roselle or Jamaican Sorrel (Hibiscus sabdariffa)
4 inch pot size with plant height between 6- 20 inches
Description:
Roselle also known as "Florida cranberry" is considered a long season annual or a tender perennial that grow to a height around 4-5 feet. After the plant flowers, it produces calyxes which is used to make tea.
Climate:
Roselle thrives in warm climates. It's sensitive to frost, so ensure temperatures remain above 50°F (10°C).
Sunlight:
Provide full sunlight for optimal growth. Roselle plants prefer at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily.
Soil:
Plant roselle in well-draining soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH. It can tolerate a range of soil types but prefers fertile soil.
Watering:
Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during dry periods. However, avoid waterlogging, as roselle doesn't tolerate waterlogged conditions well.
Fertilization:
Use a balanced fertilizer or one higher in potassium to encourage flower and fruit production. Apply fertilizer during the growing season.
Spacing:
Give each plant ample space to grow, as roselle can become bushy. Adequate spacing promotes good air circulation and reduces the risk of diseases.
Pruning:
Prune the plant to remove dead or crowded branches. This helps maintain its shape and encourages productive growth.
Pests and Diseases:
Watch for pests such as aphids or spider mites. Neem oil or insecticidal soap can help control infestations. Ensure good airflow to prevent fungal diseases.
Harvesting:
Harvest the calyces when they are plump and fleshy. This is usually around 10-12 weeks after planting. Remove the calyces by cutting the stem just below the base of the flower.
