Valerian (Valeriana officinalis)
4 inch pot size with plant height between 6- 20 inches
Valerian is a hardy perennial clumping herb that doesn't mind its feet being wet. Roots have a interesting odor. Some say it smells like dirty socks. Roots are the primary part of the herb used for medicine. Valerian is known for its calming properties and is often used in herbal remedies for sleep and anxiety.
Height:
Typically grows between 3 to 5 feet.
Fragrance:
The roots of valerian emit a, somewhat unpleasant odor.
Sunlight:
Plant valerian in partial shade to full sun, depending on the climate. It prefers cool temperatures.
Soil:
Valerian thrives in well-draining, loamy soil.
Watering:
Keep the soil consistently moist. Valerian prefers evenly moist conditions but will tolerate short dry periods.
Fertilization:
Valerian doesn't require heavy feeding. A balanced fertilizer in spring should do just fine.
Spacing:
Plant valerian with 2 feet spacing.
Harvesting:
The medicinal part of the plant is its root. Harvest the roots in the fall of the second or third year. Clean, dry, and store them for later use.
Pests and Diseases:
Watch for aphids or spider mites. Good air circulation will help to prevent fungal diseases.
Winter Care:
Valerian is hardy but benefits from a layer of mulch in colder climates to protect the roots.
