Ashwagandha is a tender perennial herb native to India and Africa. Ashwagandha is also referred to as "Indian ginseng”. It's one of the most important herbs in Ayurvedic medicine. The roots are primarily used in making medicine. Ashwagandha is a popular adaptogen (plant substance that increase the body's ability to combat the damaging consequences of stress and to encourage or restore normal physiological functioning) herb. A small shrub with greenish-yellow flowers and small fruits.

Height:
It typically grows to a height of 2 to 3 feet.

Leaves:
The leaves are oval and smooth-edged.

Roots:
The root is the primary part used for medicinal purposes and is known for its distinct smell, described as "musty-like".

Planting:
Choose well-draining soil. Ashwagandha prefers full sun but can tolerate partial shade.

Watering:
Water the plant, allowing the soil to dry out between watering. Ashwagandha is drought-tolerant once established.

Spacing:
Provide 1 to 2 foot spacing between plants to ensure good air circulation and prevent diseases.

Pruning:
While not heavily pruning-dependent, you can remove dead or diseased parts.

Fertilizing:
Use a balanced, organic fertilizer during the growing season. Avoid excessive nitrogen, which can stimulate foliage growth. Root development is most important with this plant.

Harvesting:
Harvest the roots when the plant is at least one year old, usually in the fall. Dig up the roots, clean them, and dry them for use in herbal preparations.
