Chives (Allium schoenoprasum)
4 inch pot size with plant height between 6- 20 inches
Chives are perennial herbs that belong to the onion family. They grow in clumps and produce thin, tubular leaves that are dark green and hollow. In late spring or early summer, they produce small, round, pink to purple flowers. Chives are versatile in the kitchen, adding a mild onion flavor to various dishes.
Planting:
Plant chives in well-draining soil with a pH of 6.0 to 7.0. Space the plants about 6 to 8 inches apart.
Watering:
Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Chives prefer regular watering, especially during dry periods. They can tolerate short periods of drought once established.
Sunlight:
Chives thrive in full sun but can tolerate partial shade. Give afternoon shade in warmer climates. Provide at least 6 hours of sunlight per day for optimal growth.
Fertilizing:
Chives are not heavy feeders, but adding a balanced fertilizer wound really help them. Organic compost can also enhance soil fertility.
Pruning:
Harvesting of chives should br regular to encourage new growth. Cut the leaves close to the base. Pinch back the flowers to promote leaf production, unless flowers are desired.
Temperature:
Chives are hardy in USDA zones 3-9. They can tolerate cold temperatures and will die back in winter, regrowing in spring.
Pest and Disease Control:
Chives are usually resistant to pests and diseases. However, watch for aphids or onion thrips. Treat pest if needed.
